Campbell/Jones, Rousell/Rousell, Bloxham/Bloxham.

The new season’s opener seemed to go down rather well. You lot pleased, I’m pleased!  Well done anyway to all my little helpers & very well done to all competitors on & off the private land!
Class winning scores on the doors go to the always grinning Campbell/”Selwyn” duo, a determined Rousell duo & of course the up for it duo Blox. Oh, and Mr. & Mrs. Bentley won the job…

I’ve planned a rather tight one for quite a while so it was with a little apprehension that I waited patiently on the “patch” while the Girlz administered Section 1. Simple affair using a straight line bone which took (after run 1 on said stage,) crew’s SW to Poolhouse Farm & East toward Enville golf course. Back to Highgate Common and a section finish NW of Highgate Farm. Simple relaxed run back to the disused airfield where crew’s were allowed a 2nd run at the “stage” prior to being set loose on the 38km S2 followed by a rather steady 5km S3.

So, Bulwardine start followed by… Beobridge, Sytch-Ho Green & 5-Ways. The simple (but not so simple when you are under pressure) format of exiting each & every next square by points of compass was soon to take it’s toll. Competitors now travelled through Lower Beobridge to just shave the NW corner of Sq 8092 (have a look!) whilst Sq 7993 was black spotted. Aston, West & SE to Broughton forced crew’s N to Draycott & on to Upper Aston. The next portion did in fact give one or two a head ache but, well this is what it’s all about so having looped Upper Ludstone the route entered 7995 travelling NW. Longest route in this square meant a trip around Rudge Heath but a few fell foul by taking the yellow triangle (far East of said square) instead.
Almost done then, Hopstone, Woundale & Wyken allowing the walking wounded to sample the final Yellow in S2, Hoccum.

S3 was a short affair but managed (via Stanmore,) a rather decent sting. Instruction had you finish on Northing 91 (using as little “A” road as possible.) The A442 travels through Northing 91 but just so happens to have a Yellow that peels off just a few metres prior to the line. Take the Yellow & find the final code board!

Great craick at the finish venue where prizes were handed out in good time… once again, Ta to the Girlz….

Conditions:    Light Rain.

Class Winners:     Campbell/Jones, Taylor/Taylor, Jarman Ellis

OS 127 has always offered a great selection of lane’s and the org’s certainly served up a good dish for the assembled crew’s this time! Well done them then, fresh from a win on Round One, this was an extremely clever & very acceptable idea & went down very well by all. Great to see the two crew’s travel from across the border once more & one at least returned home with the class award. Campbell/”Selwyn” doing the honours. Taylor/Taylor & Ellis/Jarman won the remaining classes whilst one more o/a win for the now sagging awards cupboard in the Darkin household took them to the top of the table after two.

Although it must be said that one of the above crew’s (in their eagerness,) visited the Shifnal services start venue exactly one week earlier(!) they did indeed arrive for the second time and, with a fine evening in prospect we all awaited the 19:00hrs signal which let plotting commence. The A41 split the route in half with a clever combination of instructions which kept us on our toes throughout. Northerly route for S1 took us to Honnington, nice loop near Lilleshall and on N to Edgmund. With the flat straights around the Ercall Heath area plotting the CB’s was a demand although they fizzled out in comparison to the yellow that starts in sq7225 & finishes 2.5km later in sq7523! SE then through Sutton & Moreton whilst the info kept car’s to the East of A41. Finally crossing the “A” at Gorsey Bank the (correct) route dropped us South just W of Tong Forge & the last gasp N to finish at Drayton Lodge. Qick relaxed run to Oakengates where we enjoyed a rather splendid curry (although the Gent serving us in sort of “prison bowl” fashion did seem to forget we had indeed paid for said meal.) Efficient results then showed who had done what but, indeed, well done to Philippa & Simon. Nice.

         Conditions: Dry.

Now… I would admit that my Missus can make a Lasagne but that Lisa Leah effort takes the biscuit!
One or two points about the above results… note Mark/Max’s total without the fails & penalties added & two crew’s separated by just 10metres in over 60km!
I’m also going to do a prediction thing here. It will not be too long before a mixed crew in the Semi class take o/a victory… we will see.

Very interesting event right from the word go, it’s rather unusual for us to have descriptive info for route plotting, more please, refreshing change was that. Tracing the route, although rare, always keeps you on ‘yer toes but in the end the two forms blended. The Bunch & Leah combo worked well again & spare a thought for good olde Davy Clayton who is rather unwell in his bed just now, missed his smiling face handing out the choc’s! So, Cambell/Jones trawled back to Welshpool with the spoils as did the rather on form “Georges”. Bloxham duo, although fourth also held the class awards up high. With the usually effervescent Mr. Darkin a little off colour & the Ellis/Jarman duo having a mediocre run the result has certainly opened the job up.

Focus DIY car park
it was then, on an unexpectedly dry eve that an almost full entry plotted & moved to the start of S1 (of two,) just NW of Edgmund. These lanes are quite a challenge for CB plotting, by the time we arrived at Cherrington three boards were already on the sheet! Over the 5062 followed by Cruddington, Cherrington & Tibberton Moor’s all of which handed out another dose of the things! Dropping South through Preston Moor the section ended just on the A442 which allowed a couple of relaxed km’s prior to S2 which began on the Yellow NE of Wrockwardine. Rushton, “Gibbons Coppice” to Little Wenlock allowed us to sample the little used yellow that drops down Braggers Hill & stays West of the railway line to finish @ SH42. Paul did admit that a CB would have worked well here, (Sq 6604) as he feared quite a few crew’s did indeed use the “white on map” found hidden behind the “o” & the “a” in Coalbrookdale. A run East through Ironbridge allowed us to slot right nr Brockton, up through Grindle & the rather mucky lanes through Evelith en-route to The Hem. Couple more boards up through Wyke found us parking up and enjoying the welcome of a well on form wood burner… & an even more on form Lasagne!! Cracker.

Class Winners:     Campbell/Jones, Green/Green, Bloxham/Bloxham        Conditions: Clear but Mucky.

It’s been a while for NE, but the trip to Ludlow passed in a blink in Pete’s big machine. OK, so I phoned Chi-Chi at 18:47 but crew’s were ready & a waiting with no sign of orgs! He duly answered whilst parked close by, all lights off, just wanting to wind us up a bit & kip us a waiting! Any road up, full entry, great stuff, and at the end, yes I know one or two crew’s were fit to bust, but just check out the results, take away a couple of fails & points, generally earned by the cracker of a sting during the 1st 3km of the route, and it would have been verrrry close. Campbell/Jones, Taylor Duo & the damn good Darkin trio sorted out the class win’s whilst my Man saved me bacon by suggesting we might take the Sidbury loop near event finish, hence using less “B” road! Well done Mr. B. As usual, plenty of good grub & very efficient results (ta Colin) Rain, Fog & Mud… what more can we ask for on a Friday evening…

With very
few instructions & just the one section we needed to be on it from the word go. Well I was for a minute of plotting… but then it went downhill. So, using my olde plan of staying at the start until sorted, it clicked & off we went. A lovely sting meant that crew’s dropped South to cross over the A road but not drive on it bagged us two boards prior to Caynham & the 100m of brown to settle us down prior to the Brookrow maze. Then the weather played its hand with just a touch of fog, this persisting through Hopton wafers & up through the cattle grids to Oreton. Org’s mentioned that no “fail” boards were along the route so this helped greatly especially during a couple of the loops. Approaching Chorley via from the South sort of seemed like the end but not quite. An easy loop up through Scriven, then back down to Deuxhill. The last few km’s should have been easy but I so nearly missed the off B road loop through Sidbury and on then to Billingsley & finish just North of Sutton at the made for the job Chelmish Club.

You know, that’s what this lot is all about. I realise it’s not nice to lose your Nav at the last minute but I’m sure I can speak for us all when young Patrick (standing in as Navigator to his Dad,) was awarded his class winning trophy on Friday Eve. Think he wants more! Very interesting & efficient event from the Taylor trio. I love map changes during an event but with a very fat & bandaged right wrist... ta Jonathan!
So Cambell/Cambell, Rousell/Rousell & the Darkin trio lugged home the trophies but it was left to the Middle pairing to carry out a just inspired o/a win... I tell you, it’s not the last! (For the anoraks... the last o/a win from the Nov class was Round Three, 2000/2001 season, organised by Smalley/Roberts. My dear departed friend Micky Cooper took the honours with his Son Richard.)
Uckington start then (126) with multiple map changes between 126/127. Longest round the Wroxeter triangles prior to Dryton, the Charlton hill nam triangle, (127) a loop to the South of the Wrekin which led us back to Rushton, Uppington, (126) (127) to finish of section! (See what I mean.)
The longer
S2 began (127) just prior to Charlton & travelled NNW (126) to Walcot before entering the notoriously difficult to plot Isombridge (127) lanes. N to Longdon on Tern, through Rodington (126 for good!) and a few subtle plots prior to diving South towards Somerwood. Nice lanes through Hunkington led us to the final few km’s near Upton Magna & the Manse. I failed us here by “going of the boil” & discussing the rather quick Scoob I was planted in, stupidly missing one of the two CB’s on the wide Berwick Grove yellow whilst approaching event end. Ooops.Lovely food, orrible loud music, great craick. (See pics on web site!)

Round Nine… Down to the wire for all classes & indeed the o/a Challenge position. Should be an interesting Evening... all starting at J4, M54 motorway services... be there.

         Conditions:  Chilly & Dry.

Classic Lane’s, classic route & a Classic Car on the entry list. I contacted the org’s on the Saturday to say a thank you from us all & I was not surprised to learn that they are already sketching out a route… for NEXT season! Ta once again George’s, well done of course to Campbell/Jones, O’Dowd/O’Dowd and the Darkin trio for pushing us very hard on this one. A close victory indeed from the oldest crew on the block!
A counter clockwise
cct of Shrewsbury… that should do the trick! A full entry gathered on what has become std weather on that Golf Club’s car park, damp. Now… if your spot height’s were previously not hi-lighted on ‘yer map, it was always going to be a struggle against time so be warned because I sense more of this to come. Mark your maps folks, save bundles of time on the night.
Luckily, section 1 allowed us to skirt the Boreton rather deep ford, so onwards through to Atcham, over the A5 to approach Hunkington from the South.
With a couple of CB’s in the bag, org’s thinned ‘em out a little prior to reaching Hadnall where a clever loop or two took the already mucky vehicles as far North as Grinshill. The Bomere Heath to Merrington yellow gave us the last glimpse of a CB marked “G” which, unknown to crew’s of course would precede a baron period designed to worry! Due West then across to Little Ness & the cracking but flooded Yellow’s through Wilcott Marsh. Not until Shrawardine did the longed for CB appear, just prior to section end at Montford Bridge.
Sect two, relatively short affair, mazed us around Shoot Hill before the clever ruling had one or two stumbling around the B junction near Cruckton. Arscott to Annscroft delived the now far from pristine motors to the doorstep of Hookagate & S2 finish.
As is the norm, the PH host’s welcomed all and fed us to bursting. Great event, less than a year till the next one!

Funny old place
the Chase I always think. But add a Sedgley based NE set of orgs & it becomes a right challenge in the old plotting dept! Once again, Karl & crew did us proud, full entry, OK a minor prob with the PC at the finish but we managed in the end. Well done to all & off course the class winners. Nov class taken by the brand new Middle crew with 2nd, yes 2nd O/a and 1st in class! Rousell duo spoiled the party once again with 6th and a hard worked Jarman/Ellis saw 3rd O/a and the Expert class win. Pete popped home to bed (say no more) as soon as we arrived at the finish. (In fact we had fitted a windscreen wiper on his side... on the inside, because he was sneezing so much throughout the event!!) I texted him to mention our position once again & his reply... “Not Bad.”
Oh well, no pleasing some folk but I luv him really.

A5 truck stop
start then, and after a rather interesting plot crews travelled North just West of Cannock passing close to the famous Mansty farm area before the aforementioned Cannock Chase intervened. The narrow yellow through Brocton Field sorted us out & my Roamer was already a steaming only 10k in! Acton Trussell  saw the end of S1 with sect two starting near Ashflats. Levedale, Mitton & Whiston made up the majority of this section with a selection of awkward lanes which kept us on the boil. Back to more familiar for S3, Horsebrook leading us to the pick up point where our score cards were replaced with new. A taste of Chillington led the now rather mucky vehicles through to Gunstone and the cleverly utilised Albrighton triangles with section finish on the A41. Finally, we needed to transfer the remaining route from a colour copy of 138 which allowed no let up with longest route required between the lines of the pre plot. Rudge, Shipley, the n.a.m. Hopstone loop passed by and luckily, the finish at Upper Farmcote loomed because Pete’s inside window was now well & truly gunged up with sneeze... Ack.

I really thought we had seen it all in NE but a valid code board with no code displayed... how did they think of that one!
Very clever tight route, well done both. I plotted the route correctly & actually drove part of it the wrong way in the heat of the mo! Not quite a full entry but there was a very good reason for that.
So... the Middle’s. A second & a fourth, anyone betting against an overall win before season end? Taylor duo took the spoils, likewise the Darkin trio. Mention must go to a cracker of a performance by Jamie & Karl with 3rd whilst the first first of this season for the olde stagers Ellis/Jarman. Nice sausages.

Four sections then, the first starting just West of the host town Westbury. With much to keep the nav on his/her toes the route passed through Halfway House & on up to the notorious Bulthy junctions in Sq 3113. Section finish at Garreg bank. S2 began just over the A458 & took to Frochas and a double usage section to 3113 but to travel North this time to Crewgreen. Across the top of Breidden forest and down through Garreg bank (very clever use of boards here) across the A, a loop through Nelly Andrews Green to finish at the crossroads on Long Mountain. This is actually where I messed up but the correct S3 route travelled NE & dropped down to the Rowley crossroads, back to Long Mountain to drop South as far as Ryecroft. Pretty serious yellows here (in fact stories of burnt clutches & 1st gear ascents were common place at the finish!) Section finish then at the B road junc in Sq 3003. Phew.
Just up the B then for a final but in depth section starting near Hampton Beech. Up to the Rowley cross roads then North East, through The Knapps to then loop back down from Westbury and effectively come back up from the South through Winwood and a very welcome pint an a sausage. Apologies from Pete who drove staright home at the end, he was not at his best on the night and fair play to him for manhandling the Trooper around a very demanding route indeed. Well done all.

Interesting idea that. Pop a few black spots in the post, turns out if you work carefully that the remaining area is 90% of the route. Not to everyone’s taste but most thought it rather good. So, down to the wire for all classes & of course the o/a Challenge. Such a shame that in the end the Darkin crew could not take part due to illness. And of course, I fell for the biggest sting whereby all around me convinced Pete & I that they were actually in the event but “running late!” Doh.

At the end then, the Middle crew once again demolished the opposition to become semis at a breeze. Mr. Taylor driven by Son Matthew turned into an Expert once more & the (“they had to go home early!”) crew of Darkin/Darkin took 1st in E class. Which of course left the oldest crew on the block to scrape through with an o/a Challenge win. Ta to the orgs, I know Ian had it tough on the night but we all live & learn, should make next seasons events even stronger these minor hiccups.

Three sections then. The first a short affair taking us North away from the M54 through The Woodhouse & up to Granville Country Park where a rather scared Anth E was waiting (with various Gypsy’s!) to take or card. A run then North again to Muxton, skirt Honnington, longest around Brockton (where lurked a rather nasty out of view triangle) score 1F for us, and East to Pave Lane. Longest rule all the time then, through Stockton Moors toward High Onn Wharf. Interesting territory this, High Onn, Orslow giving Navs plenty of head down work, (unless you were competing in an open top classic in which case both crew members had heads down!) Closing in on the A5 we then touched Crackley Bank before the rather interesting Burlington Ford area (scene of our 2nd Fail,) longest route to then take in Lizardmill Farm ford and the wide yellow SW toward Shifnal. Into S3, Evelith & West to a clever Halesfield loop which pointed us in the right direction to finish near Aqueduct. Bit hectic at the finish but all was sorted... Pete seemed happy; just for once I had to drag him out of the pub nearer Saturday than Friday! Well done all.

         Conditions: Patchy Rain, Mud.

        That's all folks...
